Canasta con flores - Basket with flowers

Haciendo limpieza y orden en casa encontré mi verdadero primer trabajo en punto cruz! Aquí no seguí un patrón ni partí de un kit... todo librado a la imaginación! Pensaba que ya había partido hacia mejores destinos (léase, la basura) dado el tiempo transcurrido y mi pobrísimo conocimiento del bordado cuando lo hice, pero no, ahí estaba, a donde menos lo imaginaba.
Lo realicé en una tela poco recomendable para bordar (pueden ver que los cuadraditos son enormes!) y para poder cubrir la superficie usé las 6 hebras del hilo. Resultado: un bordado tosco y de poca calidad, ja! En su momento me sentí muy orgullosa de haberlo hecho con mis propias manos, pero hoy lo veo y me da bastante pena. Igualmente lo rescaté del olvido y lo coloqué en el living de mi casa, como centro de una mesita... pero, eso sí: en un rincón bien alejado!


Cleaning and tiding my house I found my real first cross stitch embroidery! I didn't follow any pattern or kit... all from my imagination! I thought it had already found a better destiny (meaning, the trash can) given how long ago I stitched it and my very poor knowledge of embroidering when I created this, but no, there it was, where I less imagined it would be.
I used a non recommendable fabric to embroider (you can notice the huge grid!) and to be able to cover the surface I used the 6 threads from the floss. The result: a rough and poor quality embroidery, ja! I felt very proud to have stitched it with my very own hands at that time, but today I look at it and I feel embarrassed. But even so, I rescued it and put it on my living room as a table center... but, of course, on a dark, remote place!

Preparando el hilo para bordar - Preparing the floss to cross stitch

Compartamos hoy dos consejos básicos a tener en cuenta a la hora de comprar y preparar el hilo para bordar:

Comprando hilos: siempre compra más cantidad de hilo del necesario para realizar el bordado que has elegido. Si luego te quedas sin material y debes comprar más para continuar la misma labor, puede que te encuentres con una ínfima diferencia en el tinte de los colores y esto alterará el resultado final de tu trabajo.

Preparando el hilo: para que no se retuerza ni se anude el hilo de tu bordado usa hebras de aproximadamente 50 cm de largo. Si notas que se tensiona el hilo, levanta el bordado para que el hilo caiga hacia abajo; de esta manera lograrás que el peso mismo que tiene la aguja con la que estás trabajando acomode las hebras y la tensión de las mismas.


Let's share two basic tips to remember when buying and preparing the floss to stitch:

Buying floss: always buy more floss than what you will need to stitch your design. If you run out of materials and have to acquire more to continue the same piece, you may find yourself with a tiny difference on the colors that will definitely change the final result of your embroidery.

Preparing the floss: use threads of approximately 50 cm long to avoid any twist or knots on your floss. If the floss feels tense, pull up your embroidery and leave your threads “hanging” on the air. This way the solely weight of the needle will help to accommodate the threads and their tension.

Nos adentramos ahora en la tercera parte de esta serie de envíos en las cuales revisamos los mejores y más usados programas de computadora para bordar en punto de cruz*. El programa del que hablaremos hoy es STOIK Stitch Creator.

STOIK Stitch Creator es el programa de conversión de imágenes a patrones para bordar en punto de cruz de la línea STOIK Imaging. Esta marca posee una diversidad de programas de computadora para edición de imagen y video, y STOIK Stitch Creator es uno de los integrantes de su sección "Hobby".
STOIK Stitch Creator nos entrega todas aquellas funcionalidades básicas que esperamos encontrar en un producto de este tipo: convierte cualquier imagen digital en patrones de bordado, y nos permite crear e imprimir nuestros propios esquemas con dibujos o alfabetos para bordar.

La aplicación corre en plataforma Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT40, XP o 95, y recomienda para la visualización de patrones el empleo de Internet Explorer 4 o superior. Tiene dos modos de visualización del área de trabajo: un modo gráfico para novatos y un modo standard Windows para usuarios avanzados. En cualquiera de los dos podemos hacer uso de paneles para elegir los elementos a utilizar en nuestros patrones. Estos paneles pueden extenderse, cerrarse y moverse a voluntad a medida que los vamos necesitando, lo cual nos permite tener siempre organizada nuestra área de trabajo. Los paneles de STOIK Stitch Creator contienen los elementos necesarios para crear y editar patrones de bordado: paletas de colores, puntos de bordado, grillas y reglas, telas y medidas, gráficos y elementos de dibujo.

Trabajando sobre un gráfico podemos hacer uso de hasta 25 tipos de puntos de bordado, incluyendo el punto de cruz, medio punto en todas sus direcciones y el nudo francés. Entre los elementos de dibujo contamos con un lápiz, líneas, rectángulos y círculos, así como también una colección pre cargada de bordes, alfabetos y gráficos para implementar en nuestros esquemas. En cuanto a paletas, podemos previsualizar el esquema final bajo diferentes marcas de colores: Anchor, DMC, Madeira, J&P Coats, e incluso incorporar paletas de otros fabricantes.

A la hora de importar imágenes para convertir y editar, el programa soporta los siguientes formatos: jpg, gif, png, tif, bmp, pcx, tga, fpx y psd. Podemos exportar el gráfico final o parte de él, la lista de materiales y colores a utilizar bajo la extensión .cse.

We are getting into the third part of this series where we review the best and most used cross stitch software*. On today's review we will talk about STOIK Stitch Creator.

STOIK Stitch Creator is an application from the STOIK Imaging line that converts digital images into counted cross stitch patterns. STOIK Imaging has a diverse line of software for image and video edition, and STOIK Stitch Creator comes from its "Hobby" section.
STOIK Stitch Creator gives us all basic functions that we expect from cross stitch software: it converts any digital image into a cross stitch pattern and it allows us to create and print our own patterns, including drawings and alphabets.

This application runs on Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT40, XP or 95 and recommends Internet Explorer 4 or higher to visualize its patterns. It comes with two working modes: a graphic mode for novices and a standard Windows mode for advanced users. We can work with different panels with any of the visual modes: we can expand, collapse or drag and drop the panels as we need them, which allows us to organize our working area. STOIK Stitch Creator panels have all necessary elements to create and edit our cross stitch patterns: palettes, stitches types, grids and rules, fabrics and sizes, graphics and drawing tools.

We can use up to 25 different types of stitches, including cross stitch, middle point into all its directions, and French knot. On the drawing tools we find a pencil, lines, rectangles and ellipses, as well as a collection of borders, alphabets and graphics to use into our patterns. We can preview the final pattern under several color palettes: Anchor, DMC, Madeira, J&P Coats, and even upload other brand palettes.
If we decide to import images to convert and edit, this software supports the following digital formats: jpg, gif, png, tif, bmp, pcx, tga, fpx and psd. The final graphic or part of it, the list of materials and the color palette can be exported with the extension .cse.

Cuidado y conservación de un bordado - Protecting and preserving an embroidery

Compartamos hoy algunos consejos básicos de cuidado y conservación de un bordado:

Cuidados con un bordado: Mientras trabajes en tu labor ten la precaución de proteger la parte que ya bordaste con una tela limpia o un papel de seda. De este modo evitarás ensuciar o ajar tu trabajo. Esto es muy importante cuando la pieza es grande, ya que te tomará bastante tiempo terminarla y si no proteges la parte que ya realizaste notarás que la misma se ensucia y arruga por el mismo roce de tus manos.
Siempre trabaja con las manos bien limpias y evita ingerir alimentos y bebidas mientras bordas. ¡Un mínimo accidente puede arruinar tu bordado!
Cuando pares de bordar y decidas continuar al otro día, envuelve toda la pieza con un paño o papel bien limpios para protegerlo.

Lavando un bordado: Cuando necesites lavar tu bordado utiliza siempre agua fría y un jabón suave y neutro. Nunca laves tu bordado en la lavadora ni con lavado a seco. No lo pongas a secar al sol; sólo enróllalo en una toalla para que ésta absorba todo exceso de agua y luego extiéndelo a la sombra sobre una toalla limpia y seca.

Planchado de un bordado: Para planchar tu labor prepara dos toallas bien limpias y tu plancha no muy caliente (si usas excesivo calor puedes aplastar el hilo de tu trabajo). Coloca el bordado entre las dos toallas y procede a plancharlo del revés de la pieza. Pasa la plancha tantas veces como sea necesario hasta que la labor esté lisa por completo.

Guardar y conservar un bordado: Cuando decidas guardar tu labor asegúrate de protegerla correctamente envolviéndola en papel de seda o un trozo de tela. De esta manera cuidarás el trabajo del polvillo, la luz y la humedad.


Let’s share today some basic tips about protecting and preserving an embroidery piece:

Protecting the embroidery: While you are embroidering, always remember to protect the part you have already stitched with a clean fabric or silk paper. This way you’ll avoid staining or rumple your labour. This is very important when the embroidery is big, as it will take you some time to complete it and if you don’t protect the part you’ve stitched you’ll notice how it gets dirty and rumpled by the continuous touch of your hands.
Always work with very clean hands and avoid eating or drinking while you stitch. A little accident could ruin your embroidery!
If you decide to stop stitching and continue on the next day, wrap the whole piece with a clean fabric or paper to protect it.

Washing your embroidery: When to washing your embroidery always use cold water and a soft, neutral soap. Never put your embroidery into the washer machine or use dry cleaning. Don’t leave it under the sun, just roll it with a towel to remove the excess of water and then leave it on the shadow, over a clean, dry towel.

Ironing your embroidery: To iron your embroidery, prepare two clean towels and your iron with a low temperature (if you use excessive heat you could crush and ruin the thread). Place the embroidery between the two towels and iron on its reverse. Iron it as many times as necessary until the piece is completely smooth.

Preserving the embroidery: if you decided to store your embroidery, make sure to protect it correctly wrapping it on a piece of silk paper or fabric. This way you’ll protect it from dust, the light and humidity.

Programas de punto cruz (parte 2) - Cross stitch software (part 2)

Continuando con la serie de revisión de programas de computadora para bordar en punto cruz*, hoy es el turno de hablar sobre el programa PCStitch.

PCStitch es la aplicación más completa del mercado en cuanto a funcionalidades para crear patrones para bordar en punto cruz en sus dos versiones: PCStitch Standard y PCStitch Pro. La diferencia entre Standard y Pro radica esencialmente en la capacidad para crear alfabetos, notas, librerías y patrones propios, características no ofrecidas en el modo Standard.

Vamos a revisar aquí la versión Pro,
ya que con ella vienen librerías con gráficos gratuitos que pueden
agregarse a cualquier diseño que queramos realizar. Pero PCStitch Pro
no sólo incluye varios gráficos para usar, sino que también permite crear, guardar y re-usar patrones propios. Con esta funcionalidad podemos crear nuestras propias librerías de imágenes para agregar a cualquier diseño que queramos imprimir.
El gráfico resultante se exporta luego como archivo de PCStitch (extensión .PAT) o con formato de imagen (.jpg, .png, .bmp, .tif, o .gif).

Como con cualquier programa de esta gama, podemos importar casi cualquier formato de imagen o fotografía para editar y transformarla en un patrón con guías para imprimir y bordar en punto cruz. A las imágenes importadas podemos editarlas por completo: cortarlas, modificar su fondo, su tamaño, ajustar color, brillo, contraste, saturación, gama de colores. Podemos obtener un preview de cómo quedará la imagen antes de completar su edición; agregar notas e instrucciones al trabajo; agregar tipografías reales o abecedarios en punto de cruz; ver el uso hilos que requiere el modelo final (colores y cantidad de puntos bajo cada color); elegir el tipo y color de la tela a bordar; centrar el trabajo; seleccionar si mostrar líneas de separación, y qué color y tamaño tendrán las mismas.

PCStitch Pro provee una interfaz con paneles de comandos muy fáciles de utilizar, los cuales pueden expandirse y cerrarse a voluntad, y también pre seleccionar la vista por defecto con los paneles que más utilizamos. Los paneles pueden moverse hasta los lugares de la pantalla a donde queramos ubicarlos, permitiéndonos manejar nuestra ventana de trabajo a nuestro deseo.

A la hora de editar los puntos para bordar, el programa nos ofrece elegir entre punto cruz, punto lineal o medio punto en cualquiera de sus direcciones, símbolos, nudo francés, o bordado con cuentas (beads).
La aplicación viene con diferentes modelos de bordes, gráficos, símbolos, tipografías (tanto normales como abecedarios en punto de cruz); y nos ofrece crear  nuestra propia paleta de colores/hilos o utilizar paletas de colores en gran diversidad de marcas de hilos: Anchor, DMC, Crescent, J&P Coats, Kreinik, Madeira, Mill Hill, The Gengle Arts o Weeks Dye Works.

PCStitch corre sobre plataforma Windows (XP, 98, Vista, 7, ME, 2000, NT o 95) y si no queremos crear diseños sino abrir patrones que han sido creados con esta aplicación (archivos con extensión .PAT) podemos solamente instalar el PCStitch Pattern Viewer. En la página web de PCStitch podemos adquirir también patrones .pat de animales, flores, alfabetos y motivos navideños, entre otros.

Continuing with the series of revision of cross stitch software*, today we will talk about PCStitch.

PCStitch is the  most complete application on the market with full functionalities to create patterns for cross stitch on its two versions: PCStitch Standard and PCStitch Pro. The difference between Standard and Pro lays basically on the capability to create our own alphabets, notes, libraries and patterns, functions not offered by the Standard mode.

We are reviewing here the Pro version, which includes free libraries with patterns that can be added to any design we are creating. But PCStitch Pro doesn’t only include several graphics ready to use, but it also allows us to create, save and re-use our own patterns. With this feature we can create our own images libraries to add to any design we are working on.
The resulted graphic can be exported as a PCStitch file (.PAT extension) or as an image (.jpg, .png, .bmp, .tif, or .gif).

As with any other cross stitch software, we can import almost any format of image or photograph to edit and transform into a pattern with grids ready to print and stitch. After the image is imported into PCStitch, we can crop it, modify its background and size, adjust its color, brightness, contrast, saturation or gamma. We can preview the result before finishing our image edition; add notes and instructions; add true type or stitched text; preview the floss usage (colors and quantity of stitches for any color); to choose the type and color of the fabric to be used; to center the design; to select if we want to display grids, and if so, their size and color.

PCStitch Pro has a commands’ panel interface very easy to use: we can expand, collapse and drag and drop the panels at will. And we can even select a default view with our frequently used panels: the application comes with built in theme support that allows us to choose from predefined themes to customize the look and feel of our design workspace.
When selecting stitches, we can choose among cross stitch, lineal stitch or half point on any possible direction; symbols, French knot, or beads stitch. The application provides several borders, graphics, symbols, text (regular and stitched font); and we are offered with the option to create our own color/floss palette or to use palettes from a great variety of fabricants: Anchor, DMC, Crescent, J&P Coats, Kreinik, Madeira, Mill Hill, The Gengle Arts or Weeks Dye Works.

PCStitch runs on Windows platform (XP, 98, Vista, 7, ME, 2000, NT or 95) and if we don’t want to create patterns but to just open patterns created by this application (.PAT files) we can solely install PCStitch Pattern Viewer. On PCStitch website we can also buy .pat patterns with animals, flowers, alphabets and Holiday motives, among others.

Pequeño centro de mesa - Little table center

¡Me sigo sorprendiendo de encontrar trabajos que he realizado y ya había olvidado!
Mi mamá sacó a relucir un pequeño camino de mesa que bordé con frutas y flores para ella hace ya muchos años. Está viejito y bien usado ya, pero ¡qué lindo que es exponer en nuestras casas las labores que realizamos con nuestras propias manos!

I'm amazed by the fact that I continue finding pieces that I created but totally forgot about!
My mom brought out a little table center that I stitched for her with fruits and flowers several years ago. It's pretty old and used, but how nice it is to decorate our homes with the pieces we create with our own hands!

Programas de punto cruz (parte 1) - Cross stitch software (part 1)

En los últimos años hemos visto aparecer diversos programas de computadora que facilitan la creación de modelos para bordar, que nos ofrecen elaborados patrones, guías y hasta convierten nuestras más queridas fotografías en diseños para imprimir y bordar en punto de cruz.
Hoy vamos a empezar una serie de revisiones de diferentes aplicativos, detallando sus cualidades y destacando sus fortalezas. El programa de hoy es Puntotek.

Puntotek es un programa que permite transformar cualquier foto o imagen en patrones de hasta 1.000 por 1.000 puntos y con hasta 126 colores diferentes. También permite dibujar y generar esquemas propios, crear paletas de colores, confeccionar motivos y guardas, y elegir entre diferentes tipografías para bordar textos o abecedarios.
Nos ofrece la opción de elegir el tipo de punto a emplear: punto de cruz, punto lineal o medio punto, en sus diferentes posiciones, y cuenta con un simulador que nos permite visualizar en la pantalla una imagen realista de cómo podría quedar el trabajo una vez bordado.
Este programa convierte los colores de las imágenes a sus equivalencias en hilos para bordar de DMC, Anchor y Finca, y con su instalación obtenemos una librería gratuita de patrones y motivos para utilizar en nuestros trabajos.

A la hora de transformar imágenes y fotografías, Puntotek nos permite importar archivos .bmp, .wmf, .emf, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .pcx, .tga, .ras, .tiff, .icon, .cur o .ani., para luego ajustar y retocar a gusto sus medidas y sus colores. Los archivos generados tras esta modificación pueden ser luego guardados bajo la extensión .ptk.
Algo valioso es que nos permite instalar por separado sólo el programa de impresión de archivos .ptk, el Puntotek Print Studio, sin necesidad de instalar el programa Puntotek completo, lo cual es útil para descargar de la web e imprimir patrones creados con este software.
El programa puede ser instalado en inglés, español, catalán o portugués.

Within the last few years we have witness the appearance of different computer software that facilitate the creation of embroidery patterns, that offer elaborated models and frames, and that even convert our dearest photographs into cross stitch designs to print and stitch.
Today we are starting a series of reviews of different of those applications, detailing their qualities and naming their strengths. Today's software is Puntotek.

Puntotek is a software application that allows us to convert any photo or picture into a pattern of up to 1.000 to 1.000 points and up to 126 colors. It also allows us to draw and generate patterns of our own, create color palettes, motives and frames, and to choose among different typographies to stitch text.
We can select the type of stitch: cross stitch, lineal stitch or half point, all on their different positions, and the program comes with a simulator where we can visualize on the screen a realistic image of how the model would look like after stitched.
This application converts the image’s colors to their equivalences on threads DMC, Anchor and Finca, and it provides a library of free patterns and motives ready to use.

We can import any image with extensions .bmp, .wmf, .emf, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .pcx, .tga, .ras, .tiff, .icon, .cur or .ani., to later adjust and retouch their measures and colors at our will. The resulted files after modification can be saved under .ptk extension.
A valuable thing to mention here is that we can install only the software to print .ptk files, the Puntotek Print Studio, without having to install the whole Puntotek application, something very useful to just download and print patterns from the web.
The application can be installed in English, Spanish, Catalan or Portuguese.
