¿Por qué bordo? - Why do I stitch?
Muchas veces me han preguntado porqué realizo bordados en punto cruz. ¿Decoración? ¿Terapia? ¿Emprendimiento para vender? Bueno, hay muchas razones... bordar es principalmente un hobby, un pasatiempo, un disfrute y una terapia: todos los que realizamos alguna manualidad (cualquiera que esta sea) sabemos que mientras estamos en plena labor sentimos el placer de realizar un objeto único, diferente, creado por nosotros mismos (aún cuando estemos siguiendo un modelo o patrón). Aún cuando nadie vea el trabajo que realizamos, el sentimiento de realización y bienestar personal está siempre presente.
Por otro lado, exhibir lo que hacemos es parte innata de ser humano... exponerlo, ensalzarlo, tenerlo a la vista. Entonces, sí, también bordo en punto cruz para decorar mi hogar, mis pertenencias, todo lo que me rodea. Con ello alegro mi entorno y a la vez puedo apreciar siempre mi trabajo, con todas sus virtudes ¡y con todos los errores que le encuentre!
Ahora... ¿hacer dinero con él? Bueno, ¡ahí está la parte más difícil! El mundo está lleno de bordadoras profesionales, capaces y dedicadas exclusivamente a bordar y bordar. ¿Qué poder de acción puede tener una sola persona que lo realiza en sus tiempos libres? La web nos permite borrar distancias y barreras... mostrar lo que hacemos sin importar a dónde estemos. Con este blog no sólo acerco lo que hago sino que tal vez algún día alguien se interese en mis piezas lo suficiente como para invertir dinero en ellas. O tal vez no. ¡Pero no importa! Ninguna de nosotras bordarmos solamente para vender... ninguna de nosotras dejará de hacerlo si nadie compra uno de nuestros trabajos. Bordamos, decoramos, regalamos, apreciamos, nos relajamos y nos sentimos un poco más felices a través de esta manualidad... ¡y el dinero no tiene el poder de cambiar esto!

Many times I’ve been asked why I stitch. Decoration? Therapy? To make money? Well, I have several reasons… to embroider is mainly a hobby, a pleasant time and a therapy: every art and craft (whatever it may be) gives a sense of pleasure when we realize we are creating a unique, different piece with our hands (even if we are following a model or a pattern). It doesn’t matter if anybody sees the piece we are creating, the fulfillment and pleasure are still there.
On the other hand, to exhibit and expose what we create is an innate part of the human being. So, yes, I also stitch to decorate my home, my belongings. I leave my mark on my surroundings and at the same time it gives me the chance to appreciate my work with all its virtues and with all the errors I may find on it!
Now… to make money? Well, that’s the hardest part! The world is full of cross stitch professionals, exclusively dedicated to stitch and stitch. What can a single person who does this labor on her free time do? The web allows us to conquer distances and barriers, to show what we do, no matter where we may be. With this blog I don’t only expose what I do but also, maybe, someday, somebody will interest on my pieces enough to invest his/her money on them. Or maybe not. But it doesn’t matter! None of us stitch only for the money… none of us will stop stitching if nobody buys one of our pieces. We embroider, decorate, gift, appreciate, relax and feel a little bit happier through this activity… and money doesn’t have the power to change that!

Lapicero con flores - Pencil holder with flowers
Otro trabajo que realicé hace varios años: un lapicero bordado con flores y guardas. Con sólo un retazo de tela panamina podemos jugar con diferentes decoraciones para adornar un lapicero, un mantelito, un florero o lo que tengamos a mano. Es una excelente forma de usar hasta los últimos recortes de tela que puedan quedarnos y emplear los hilos que quedan "sueltos" en nuestro costurero.
Aquí apliqué flores y cintas a una latita de conservas para decorar mi lapicero. Sí, ¡una lata de arvejas! Luego de lavarla y ventilarla cuidadosamente (no olviden limar toda punta o aspereza que pueda cortarnos), forré el interior y la base con papel de cartulina, pegué la panamina bordada y rematé los bordes con restos de cintas para que quede más prolijo.
¡No me digan que el punto de cruz no es una técnica fabulosa para decorar nuestro hogar!
Another piece I stitched some years ago: a pencil holder decorated with flowers and ribbons. With just a small piece of panama we can play with different graphics to decorate a pencil holder, a table cloth, a vase or whatever piece we may have at hand. It's an excellent way of using those last pieces of fabric and threads we have left.
Here I applied flowers and ribbons to a little can to create a pencil holder. Yes, a beans can! After I cleaned and aired it carefully (do not forget to remove any possible sharpness that may cut your fingers), I covered the interior and the base with cardstock, added the stitched panabe and finally added some ribbons to cover the borders.
Isn't cross stitch a fabulous technique to decorate our home?

Centro de mesa con flores y frutas - Table center with flowers and fruits
Como ya les conté, me gustan los bordados grandes, esos que toman meses para terminarlos! En este caso les muestro un trabajo bastante antiguo: un centro de mesa que hice en el 2001.
Este centro de mesa está hecho sobre una tira de tela aída, en cuyos extremos bordé frutas y flores en "positivo" y "negativo". En realidad, la idea de usar los mismos colores en "negativo" devino de probar algo diferente... no sé cuán realista quedó, pero fue muy divertido intentarlo. ¿Qué opinan?
As I mentioned on previous posts, I like big embroideries, those that take months to complete! Here you can see an old piece: a table center I embroidered back in 2001.
This table center consists on a long piece of aida where I stitched flowers and fruits on "positive" and "negative" colors. Actually, the idea of using the same colors on "negative" came from the need of trying something different.... I'm not sure how "realistic" it looks, but I had a great time doing it. What do you think?

El tiempo vuela... - Time flies...
Wow, ya estamos en Julio! Es increíble cómo vuela el tiempo, ¿verdad?
"El tiempo es la única pérdida que no puede redimirse", dijo Jonathan Rhys Meyers como el Rey Enrique VIII en "The Tudors". ¡Cuán cierto es!
Ya ha pasado la mitad del año y hace varios meses que estoy trabajando en una pequeña alfombra. Decidí bordar toda la superficie de la alfombra, así que el trabajo me está tomando bastante tiempo. Pero, a decir verdad, me gusta cuando una pieza me toma mucho tiempo... ¡obtengo un gran sentido de logro cuando finalmente la termino!
No creo que la esté terminando pronto, pero no importa... no tengo ningún apuro cuando bordo y ¡es por eso que lo encuentro tan terapéutico!
¿Qué están bordando ahora?

"Time is the only lost that can't be redeemed", said Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII on "The Tudors". What a truth!
Half of the year has gone now and I've been working on little carpet for some months now. I decided to have the whole surface of the carpet stitched, so it's talking a long time to be done. But, actually, I like it when a piece takes much of my time... somehow I get a complete sense of accomplishment when I get to finish it!
I don't think I'll be done with it any time soon, but I don't mind.... I don't have any rush at all when stitching and that's why I find it so therapeutic!
What are you stitching now?
